Emma took part is this year’s NGIC High Level UN side meeting alongside global leaders including WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and Kerry Kennedy. Emma participated as a delegate to the conference and spoke on a panel on Women, Peace and Security.

In her contributions Emma called for a deeper understanding of the unique structural and cultural barriers in post-conflict zones, and for a more intersectional approach to the WPS agenda. She highlighted that Northern Ireland inspired the WPS UN security council resolution 1325, yet the resolution had not been adopted in Northern Ireland. At present, Northern Ireland is one of the most dangerous places in Europe for women, with femicide levels only outranked by Romania.

Other speakers on the panel included the Director of UN Women, Sima Bahous, President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, and former Argentine Minister for Foreign Affairs, Susana Malcorra.
